ACUPUNCTURE THERAPY

Note that we currently have a staff doctor studying acupuncture, but that acupuncture is currently being practised off-site -- see below.

Acupuncture is defined as the stimulation of special points on the body resulting in a desired physiologic effect. Acupuncture therapy is generally used when medications are not working or are having side effects and when surgery is not feasible. The following conditions, among others, may respond to acupuncture therapy.

    Musculoskeletal conditions
  • arthritis
  • hip dysplasia
  • intervertebral disc disease
    Dermatologic conditions
  • lick granuloma
  • chronic allergic dermatitis
    Neurologic conditions
  • traumatic nerve injury
  • epilepsy
    Respiratory conditions
  • asthma
    Gastrointestinal conditions
  • chronic irretractable diarrhea and constipation

Acupuncture therapy is initially performed once a week for six to eight weeks. Treatments are then tapered off to whatever is necessary to maintain the animal's improvement. Normally, patients are seen once every two to six months for continued therapy.

Treatments are currently performed off-site by Dr. David Lindsay DVM, CVA (Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist). Dr. Lindsay, who has practiced conventional medicine for 20 years, took the International Veterinary Acupunture Society (IVAS) 144 hour Certification Course, and has used acupuncture therapy since mid-1992.
